From Yahoo news, AP wire story. ANKARA, Turkey - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the United States, Turkey and Iraq will counter any attacks on Turkey by Kurdish rebels operating out of northern Iraq.
Many Turks are furious with the United States for its perceived failure to pressure Iraq into cracking down on the PKK rebels, whose full name is the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Street protesters have urged the government to send forces across the border even if it means a deepening of the rift with the U.S., their Cold War ally.
The United States acknowledged this week that it has undertaken limited military moves against the rebels after asserting for weeks that the clash between Iraq and Turkey was a diplomatic matter.
Pentagon officials said the U.S. was flying manned spy planes over the border area, providing Turkey with more intelligence information, and that there are standing orders for American forces to capture rebels they find.
I often wonder. Do people in the White House, State Department and the Pentagon even have half a brain? It often seems they do not. I guess it's a matter of perspective. Karen Hughes was on NPR today and said "the USA has the same image in other countries now as it did in 2005". In my words she is saying our image has not changed, she could mean "it's just as bad now as it was in 2005" or she could really believe that Bush has made our image better with other countries.
Directly in front of our face is a way to resolve the Iraq occupation. Do we not see it? Do we pretend not to see it. We should withdraw our 166,000 troops from Baghdad now. Not next week, not next month, not next year, now. Half could go into Kuwait and half into Northern Iraq to "defend the Kurds", which we failed at doing once if you recall, under Bush Sr.. The training of Iraq police could be done in Kuwait, a rapid response force could control insurgence from Kuwait and Northern Iraq.
I think everyone knows when we do withdraw it will be by way of Kuwait and Turkey, our allies. Kuwait owes the USA for defending there country when Iraq invaded Kuwait, call in the marker.
The door is open now, will those in power have the intelligence to walk through it? Or will they wait and remain indecisive until the door is no longer open then say "we should have done this".
