Take a Stand

Even after our bloodiest summer in Iraq, George Bush still refuses to reevaluate his flawed strategy that led to one of the worst foreign policy blunders in our nation's history. A change of course in Iraq is long overdue, and I will fight for that change in the coming weeks.

In July, several Republicans began to speak out against the President's failed strategy. But when it came time to vote, they continued to back George Bush.

I promise you, I will not let these Republicans hide. When the Senate returns to Washington, I will force them to take vote, after vote, after vote on bringing an end to the war in Iraq. Talk is cheap -- their votes are what really count. Republicans will have to decide, do they stand with the President or with the American people?

This summer, Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, a coalition of organizations working to end the war, put pressure on these Republicans utilizing hundreds of organizers and thousands of volunteers. Their efforts will culminate with town hall meetings and Stand Up Vigils across the country on August 28th.

Take A Stand Town Halls and Stand Up Vigils are part of a nation-wide organizing drive to demand that members of Congress stand with the vast majority of Americans who want a safe and responsible redeployment of American Forces from Iraq.

Sign up to attend a Take A Stand Town Hall or Stand Up Vigil in your community by visiting:

In September the White House will issue its report on the surge. They will try to use this moment to convince the American people that the escalation worked.

That's why if you want to end the war, it is vital you participate in this event. We need to put as much pressure as possible on Republicans in Congress.

Harry, if you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen.

So, you want to compromise on a withdrawal date. Perhaps you need to look again at the real Harry's motto:

If you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen.

Nice try of bashing Harry Reid...

The Senate is still divided and Harry is doing a excellent job considering everything involved in this "Bush" war and trying to get us out of this mess that "Bush" has got us into... Harry is doing his best to correct the mistakes of "Bush" administration of failure and that is not a easy job... Harry you doing a great job in trying to steer America back from this "Bush" madness and I support you all the way until the madness is defeated! The heat is on and it is on "Bush" and his failure to defend America and it is not your fault at all... I Know you and appreciate you very much for trying to straighten out this mess that "Bush" has cost out way of life!

Lexus-Nexus : DEMOCRATIC SENATORS HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE ON GENERAL
PETRAEUS AND AMBASSADOR CROCKER'S TESTIMONY BEFORE CONGRESS

SEPTEMBER 12, 2007

SPEAKERS: SEN. HARRY REID, D-NEV.,
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER

SEN. CARL LEVIN, D-MICH.

SEN. JACK REED, D-R.I.

Reid:It's time to reduce our large combat footprint and to fight in other areas to make this {Iraq} country safer.

Who...ah! Let's get Syria and Iran Harry! The IED's have their respective names on it, let's go (but only if we travel using your state's bio-diesel)!

New Democratic Slogan: Combat footprints cause global warming.

New Enemy of Terror- Al-Cholera!

Reid: And now statements are coming out of northern Iraq, that now they have a cholera epidemic that they're afraid is going to spill into Baghdad. This country's in real trouble.

(Poetic License) Reid: Let's leave before our combat footprint steps in this Cholera.

Harry, you can't possibly support our troops if they cause global warming, can you?
Bravo for Timelines announced today
By MS Sep 18th 2007 at 8:57 pm EDT
Hooray for Democrats standing up for timelines for withdrawl of our troops from Iraq. We are pleased to see Harry Reid call for timelines today.

This is the AP story on 9-17-07:

After weeks of suggesting Democrats would temper their approach to Iraq legislation in a bid to attract more Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared abruptly Tuesday that he had no plans to do so.

The Democratic leader said he will call for a vote this month on several anti-war proposals, including one by Sen. Carl Levin that would insist President Bush end U.S. combat next summer. The proposals would be mandatory and not leave Bush wiggle room, said Reid, D-Nev.

"There (are) no goals. It's all definite timelines," [Reid] told reporters of the planned legislation.

Troops Out of Iraq NOW
By MS Aug 31st 2007 at 2:59 pm EDT
We need a renewed commitment from Harry Reid and the Democrats to A TIMETABLE TO GET OUT TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ.

What good is it to have elected Democrats as "the opposition" if they never oppose the Republican agenda.

We do not want this to be the Democrats' war in Iraq -- which it will be if Democrats don't stand up to get us out now.

This is from policy analyst Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo: Link

Signaling a major change in negotiation strategy, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says his demands for a firm commencement date for troop withdrawals from Iraq this coming spring has become an "obstacle" and that he is willing to compromise with Republicans on the issue.

Late Update: Reid's spokesman responds to our query about his remarks, leaving little doubt that he's open to the possibility of funding the war this fall without withdrawal timelines.

Yeah, Harry, Take a Stand
By TexasDem Sep 3rd 2007 at 12:13 pm EDT
Harry, before you ask us to "take a stand" against the Administration's policies, you need to decide what kind of leader you're going to be.

You can't talk tough about "benchmarks" and accountability, then cave on the additional funding before the negotiations even begin. You can't criticize the Attorney General, then give him even more unchecked power, under the new FISA bill, than he had before.

What is going on up there, Harry? And whose side are you on?

Whose side do you think? If he is giving them Hell he must be from that side.

The Big Picture
By Leo Brown Sep 3rd 2007 at 7:13 pm EDT
Dear Senator Reid,

What is at stake here is more than a timetable to get our troops out of Iraq, as important and desirable as that may be. It is a matter of utmost urgency for our country and the world, to both the current and future generations, for you to:

1. Prevent the President from unilaterally undertaking a new and even more disastrous war in Iran.

2. Reestablish the constitutionally mandated congressional role in matters of war and peace.

3. Rein in the influence of what President Eisenhower famously called the military-industrial complex

4. Correct the current cultural and institutional bias in favor of war over diplomacy.

I do not doubt the difficulty of these tasks but trust that you will be able to draw on your years of experience in the Senate in accomplishing them. Millions of Americans are counting on you as you take your stand.

Sincerely,

Leo Brown

Why are Dems Folding when they have all the cards?
By MS Sep 8th 2007 at 5:52 pm EDT
Today Arianna Huffington writes on the widely-read blog, HuffingtonPost.com: ariDemocrats Hold All the Cards on Iraq, So Why Are They Folding?

Please do not look for compromise here. LEAD THE DEMOCRATS and get us OUT OF IRAQ now.

Do not make this a DEMOCRATS WAR. It is a Republicans War, unless the Democrats refuse to take a stand, in the name of "compromise."

STOP IT NOW. GET US OUT OF IRAQ NOW.

Harry, Stop Condemning MoveOn
By TexasDem Sep 21st 2007 at 9:36 am EDT
When the Republicans were in the majority, no one paid any attention to the Democrats. Now that the Democrats are in the majority, they're letting the Republics steal the show.

Harry, why did you let them vilify MoveOn.org? The Republicans never would have let such a thing ever come up against their base -- and they certainly wouldn't have voted for it!

The wrong that was committed in this case was the President politicizing a military leader, and somehow you let this be about a pun in a newspaper ad.

Stop thinking like a loser, Harry. Stop thinking yourself into knots, trying to anticipate how the Republicans might attack you.

You have the vast majority of Americans on your side on every issue that counts. ACT LIKE IT.

Let them Filibuster
By User from Nevada City, CA Sep 22nd 2007 at 11:43 pm EDT
Make the 'publicans filibuster. Ditch the "gentleman's agreement" to hold a cloture vote and move on. Make them speak for days and days to stop the Webb bill. Make the headlines "Republicans block vote on bill to support the troops!" Instead the headline is "Democrats defeated again."

You are losing support of Democrats and Independents, and never had the support of most Republicans. Can it go lower than 11%?

Start playing hardball with the 'publicans our you'll sink even lower.

Read this.
Link

Voters are getting the message: Democrats are weak in the face of aggression, and can barely block the blows from a minority in Congress and from a bully sitting at 29 percent in the polls.

Wake up and really Give them Hell. Make them sweat - all night filibusters for days and days until the cry from the American people is deafening"
Get our troops out of that civil war in Iraq! Restore our Constitutional Rights!

The MAJORITY OF AMERICANS support these positions. Don't be afraid of the 'publican barking dogs.

Immunity for Telecom Companies
By User from Statesboro, GA Oct 19th 2007 at 4:25 pm EDT
We must stand up and block immunity for the telecom companies. It's a disgrace that Democratic members of the intelligence committee approved immunity. I would only consider immunity for specific incidents provided the full details are disclosed to congress and only grant immunity for the detailed incidents. It is actions like what the intelligence committee did that give the congress such a low approval rating. I'm a lifelong Democrat and member of the state committee and I find it hard to say I approve of much they do.

I, too, stand with Chris Dodd on this one.

Harry, What the HELL is it with you and the rest of the Democrats????

You ride into office with a mandate so clear that even Carl Rove can’t spin it, and you immediately turn into invertebrates!!

You have failed miserably to “Stand UP!,” as you challenged others to do but you won’t do, to virtually EVERY opportunity to move forward the agendas you were elected to implement.

WHAT THE HELL IS WITH YOU AND THE OTHER SENATE DEMOCRATS SELLING OUT TO THE TELECOMS ON FISA!!!!!!!!!!! EVEN THE REPUBLICANS ADMIT IT IS NOT ABOUT NATIONAL SECURITY BUT “PROTECTING THE PRIVATE SECTOR”

You and the rest of the democrats that folded on this and supported all the other Republican agendas should be voted out of office so we can get some people with spines in Washington the fulfill the mandates your were given and have totally abandoned.

It is very apparent that you really don’t want feedback on what you are (rather aren’t) doing there in DC, you don’t even have the courage to put an email address anywhere on your site where people can write you directly. Rather, we have to jump through hoops to be able to post to this blog that I doubt seriously you, or even your staff, give much consideration to, if you even read it at all.

The rest of you who do invest the time and energy to read these, congratulations on your spirit and dedication to the democratic process that Harry and the rest of the Democrats in Washington have lost sight of and commitment to.

Maybe we can give these guys a wake-up call in November so they wake-up, smell the coffee and DROP THE PLOITICS AND POLITICAL MANUVERING AND ACTUALLY DO THE PEOPLE”S BUSINESS AND DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO COVERING SOMEONE ELSE’S ASS OTHER THAN THEIR OWN!!!

HARRY GET THE MESSAGE (which I doubt he will get now given he didn’t get it in the last election), and thank you to the rest of you who read this for this opportunity for me to rant!!!

I give you Harry Reid!
By amuzikman Oct 24th 2007 at 12:58 am EDT
Harry

You are incompetent.
Pity those who look to you for real leadership.
They will never find what they are looking for.
