Advocating for Energy Independence

"Science has been ignored at the Federal level for too long, but that time is over," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) told an audience today in a speech at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
Reid came to the Center to advocate, along with the Action Fund, for a progressive energy agenda that would benefit families, increase energy independence, and reduce global warming. The agenda focuses particular attention on boosting investments in clean alternative energy technologies such as wind and solar power, spurring biofuels production, and encouraging auto companies to build hybrids in return for health care costs relief.

And there's been plenty of drilling all over the US. Even in Alaska and on the coasts. Link
for example.
The reality is, the oil companies haven't built any refineries because they have good reason to believe the age of oil is coming to an end, and they don't want to be stuck with expensive infrastructure that will have no use ten years down the road.
This energy bill will make a huge step to getting the rest of the country ready for the transition the oil companies know is happening. We need strong, heavy investment in alternatives to get us through this, or it's going to be pretty rough.
Thanks Harry for taking the lead - good luck getting Republican support for it!
LV only posts on these boards to smear Senator Reid...
Good to see you posting...
The next post from LV will be a smear against you and me...
Don't stop posting however...
The truth is coming to a head...
We need energy independence from all foreign sources if we are going to remain number one...
That means massive government and private investment in solar, wind and geothermal energy if America is going to remain near the top!
My little house can generate twice the power that it consumes here in Henderson if the government would start to act!
I am so proud of you!
It is time for a leader like you to start showing the leadership needed for America!
Solar, wind and geothermal energy in Nevada is here and now...
Please help start a revolution in congress to make America independent from all outside sources of energy.
The Southern Nevada Water district has a facility that converts solar energy into fuel for their fleet already!
A massive shift in the direction in energy generation by massive investments by the government and private sector is needed now... Not after all the oil is gone...
Those that ignore should go back to the times when wood was the only source of energy and heating!
Stand strong and firm and do more to make America strong again without dependence of foreign sources for our great way of life...
All our energy needs can be meet without foreign sources if we act now to shape the future of American now!
Who is more important?
Oil companies are the American people?
The Oil companies are the not of the best interests of Americans now and the interests of the American people are more important...
The vast majority of Americans I talk to everyday what to keep America strong and the best way to do that is to go towards total independence from foreign oil sources and developing what the sun rains down on the earth everyday!
Permits for refinery expansions aren’t hard to come by in oil states like Texas and Louisiana. Marathon got a permit to expand in less than a year.

In Texas and Louisiana there hasn’t been a state government of either party hostile to the oil and gas industry in living memory. That is a fact of life in the oil patch.
Drilling for oil off the coast of GOP-controlled Florida might be a different matter.
Refineries are now being expanded. Google “refinery expansion” and you will get a lot of hits.
So why weren’t refineries expanded sooner? Because it was not in the oil companies' interest to expand capacity earlier. Their own internal documents in the 1990’s show a concern that too much refining capacity was driving prices down!

There aren’t many secrets about who is building what. Even in the absence of a conspiracy, it is easy for oil companies to signal publicly to one another about what they are going to build. And by not building refineries they can drive prices up. The laws of supply and demand will eventually call forth new refinery capacity and drive prices lower, unless there are anti-competitive moves or unless the price of crude oil goes up.
True, refining costs could be lowered if we repealed all the environmental regulations, but I can remember when driving in LA made my eyes burn, and I don’t want to return to the bad old days.
Energy independence is a serious issue and not an easily reached goal. The laws of supply and demand can’t be repealed, and the days of cheap energy may be over. The barriers to energy independence are high. Right after 9/11 the president could have rallied the country to this cause, but the opportunity was missed. We can still do it, but it won’t be cheap or easy. However, the cheapest way to reduce our energy dependence is to use less imported energy through greater efficiency and more conservation.
And LV needn’t worry about the Senate rushing this through. Between the GOP and the Democrats in the oil patch, and a Bush veto, the oil industry is safe. As for secret meetings, please ask Dick Cheney how that works.
"Blaming the Democrats for everything is a convenient substitute for serious policy discussions."
Try substituting the word "Bush", or "Cheney", or "Rove", or "The Republicans" for the words "the Democrats" in your statement... And you will have the truth.
"Drilling for oil off the coast of GOP-controlled Florida might be a different matter."
I'm SURE you will correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the BIG Corp GOP isn't preventing drilling off of Florida. I'm pretty sure that is being thwarted by Liberal Environmentalists No???
G'day!
Clinton Happens!
Yes, we are in surprising agreement on this. Though in Florida I believe it is not so much the environmentalists, though they are a part of the picture, as the whole tourist industry that wants to protect their beaches. The old NIMBY effect.
I don’t blame the GOP for circumstances beyond their control. Nevertheless, the Bush energy policy does seem to depend too much on this link

In any event, you ignored the evidence that oil companies wanted to avoid surplus capacity, which they saw as a problem and a threat to their profits.
Nothing can be rushed through the Senate without a consensus. The Democratic majority is razor thin. Only with the cooperation or acquiescence of at least some Republicans can much be done. For better or worse, that is a fact of life until the next election. The left and the right have a hard time realizing that.
Nothing you say means anything in the long run.
