I would like to support the opinion of most other progressive democrats to bring the troops home NOW and send in international troops to maintain order in Iraq until the Iraq's have a stable government in place. All informed people know it is the presence of the American troops that is the center of the violence in Iraq.
I continue to be disappointed in Mr. Reid for bowing to the administration. Tough talk at a convient time is not impressive nor is tough talk and not backing it up with your vote. We progressives mean business and will not stop fighting Washington until we have sanity in our government, begin true representation of "we the people" for the first time in our history and an end to scheeming wars for corporate and political gain at the expense of hundreds of thousands of lives. Harry, get on board with us and by the way, we plan to impeach. How arrogant of you and Nancy to believe it is up to you two to make that decision after all "we the people" have suffered from this administration!

Has President Bush provided a detailed PLAN for exactly what mission the additional troops would be performing in Iraq, the probability that the additional troops could successfully complete that mission and an exact timeframe for how long they would be there. Has the President provided contingency PLANS on what would be done if the mission failed? Has the President provided a detailed PLAN for exactly how he will provide and equip the additional troops? Has he provided a detailed cost estimate for the escalation of troop levels in Iraq?
Why are Democrats in Congress giving any answer other than When President Bush provides us with a PLAN to review, we will be able to answer your questions about troop escalation? Until then, we do not have enough information arrive at a decision. Read More »

Frankly, I don't believe that more troops is the answer for Iraq. It's a civil war and America should not be policing a Sunni-Shia conflict. In addition, we don't have the additional forces to put in there. We obviously want to support what commanders in the field say they need, but apparently even the Joint Chiefs do not support increased combat forces for Baghdad. My position on Iraq is simple:
1. I believe we should start redeploying troops in 4 to 6 months (The Levin-Reed Plan) and complete the withdrawal of combat forces by the first quarter of 2008. (As laid out by the Iraq Study Group)
2. The President must understand that there can only be a political solution in Iraq, and he must end our nation's open-ended military commitment to that country.
3. These priorities need to be coupled with a renewed diplomatic effort and regional strategy.
I do not support an escalation of the conflict. I support finding a way to bring our troops home and would look at any plan that gave a roadmap to this goal.
It's been two weeks since the Iraq Study Group released its plan to change the course and bring our troops home. Since then, the President has been on a fact finding tour of his own administration -- apparently ignoring the facts presented by those in the military who know best. The President needs to put forth a plan as soon as possible, one that reflects the reality on the ground in Iraq and that withdraws our troops from the middle of this deadly civil war.

I don't know how you can read the election any other way--we did not vote to send more troops to Iraq. Advisors, adschmisors--by any modest estimate it would take 10 years to train the Iraqi 'security' forces to a professional level by American standards, and by any moral compass the way we voted is to get out. Get out of the bases that the oil companies insisted we build so that there would be a permanent U.S. presence in Iraq for 'stability' in the region--which means 'protect the oil and give it to us'....IT'S OVER, HARRY. GET US OUT. ALL THE WAY OUT. Not one more American life on Iraqi soil for the sorry purpose of American companies to profit from controlling and maintaining an outpost in the rich fields of the Middle East. NOT ONE MORE AMERICAN LIFE.
It is time to bring our troops home. The news reports coming out of Iraq is not easy to watch. I think sometimes that I must be dreaming. In my wildest dreams I never thought that the Country where I was borne and went to school to learn about the history of the world would ever attack another country that was no threat to us.
For every American who dies for Bush's war another Mother's heart is broken. This country is in tears and the long trail of sadness follows us like the aroma of the flowers in a funeral parlor.
George Bush is a fanatic, used to a life of luxuray and never being told no. Unlike most Americans who pay for thier mistakes The Peter Priciple was applied when Bush erred. Up until he promoted himself with help from the republicah party to the office of President his mistakes did do affect a lot of people.
Today America, Iraq and all of the countries around Iraq are in danger of becoming involved in a regional war unless pressure is put upon George Bush to bring our troops home. Our American soldiers have done the job they were sent to Iraq to do. I did not support this war. However thousands of Americans did and I believe today if they could look back they would not cast one vote for this insane President.
Bush is sick mentally sick look at him when he tries to give a press conferance, observe the smirk the glassey eyes, the cockey walk and the stubborness.
Bush does not consider himself just as a President but an Emperor. He cares not that the people elected him and the people are his boss. In Bush's tormented mind everyone is trying to tell him what to do (just push him aside) He is filled with terror that he will be found out about his evil ways the papers he signed to allow the torture of our prisoners of war. His signature on documents to allow this government to spy on all American citizens. He does not want the many statements that he added to laws passed by congress which allow him to ignore the law that he had just signed made public.
If this country is ever to achieve the standing in the World that it once had then truth and honestey will have to be re-instilled in our Country and in the hearts of the men who leads us. This will never occur as long as Bush and Cheney remain in office.
George Bush is The-Commander-in -Chief of our Country how long are the people in this Country going keep quiet while a madman rules us with an Iron Hand. I sometimes wonder if Hitler has not arisen from the grave.

A simple change in Senate Rules and so many benefits for America.
The US Senate should change their Advise and Consent procedures to require a 60 vote super majority rather than the current simple majority vote for lifetime judicial appointments to the US Supreme and Appeals Court?
Such a simple rule change in Senate procedures would eliminate all the bitter political warfare over presidential nominations. All Americans would benefit. The drafters of the US Constitution gave the Advise and Consent process to the Senate and not to the People's House, because they hoped that the elder statesmen in the Senate would be shielded from the political heat of the moment. If 60 votes were necessary for approval, all Presidents, current and future, would nominate judges, who can receive such a vote.
Please contact your US Senators and ask them to support this change in Senate Rules.

As you probably have heard by now, Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota became ill yesterday and was taken to the hospital.
The thoughts and prayers of everyone here in the Senate are with Tim and his family.
Tim is getting the finest care in the world at George Washington University Hospital. I, along with Senator Daschle, were with the family last night and this morning.
Admiral John Eisold, Attending Physician of the United States Capitol just released a statement saying, "Senator Tim Johnson has continued to have an uncomplicated post-operative course. Specifically, he has been appropriately responsive to both word and touch. No further surgical intervention has been required."
As Senator Johnson continues his recovery, the Senate continues to prepare for the 110th Congress. There's a lot to do on behalf of the American people, and we are looking forward to getting to work next year.
If you would like to send Senator Johnson a get well note you can do it by clicking here.
I will make sure he receives all of your good wishes.

This is my personal Wish List for the 110th Congress:
Above all else, the Troops MUST be withdrawn as soon as possible from Iraq, leaving only military advisers to assist the Iraqi people, even if we have to continue funding their efforts--since we did, after all, bust up their entire country and its infrastructre. %##%^ Geo. W. Bush
But onto additional pressing issues:
1. Reverse the PLUNGE towards fascism in the U.S.
2. Rescind the asinine Patriot Act.
3. Dump the Military Commissions Act.
4. Restore habeas corpus and the Bill of Rights.
5. Impeach Bush and Cheney, as the Constitution demands.
6. Cancel corporate race to offshore tax havens.
7. Make the minimum wage a LIVING WAGE--change its name to L.W.
8. Mandate DIPLOMACY over preemptive WAR.
